Why does CFS have a Torah Service?
The original purpose of the communal gathering in God’s house of worship was to read and expound on the TaNaKh (the Old Testament). The Torah service is the oldest liturgy of the Shabbat service.
Did you know that Yeshua, our Messiah, read from the Torah Scroll in God’s house? The prophets, Paul, James, and all the Apostles, honored the Torah and attended the synagogue just as Yeshua did.
In I Timothy 4:13, Paul told Timothy to ‘devote yourself to the “public reading of Scripture,” to preaching and to teaching. What Scripture do you think Paul was referring to? He was referring to the TaNaKh (the Old Testament) which was the only Scripture they had!
The Torah is the 1st 5 books of the Bible. It is divided into weekly portions which is called a Parasha. It is interesting to note that the same portion or Parasha is read on the same day all over the world.
Our goal is not to become Jewish or act Jewish. Our desire is to follow in the footsteps of Yeshua by studying the same Scriptures He studied. “We want to become Yeshua — (ish) in all we do!”
Let me tell you a little about our Torah Scroll. We desired a kosher Scroll that survived WWII. Ours was written just as the rumblings of WWII were heating up. Undoubtedly the scribe who wrote our scroll faced much anti-Semitism as it was fierce in Romania during the 1930s. Our scroll was bought by fledgling Israel shortly after Israel became a state. And it served in an Israeli synagogue until it traveled to Tucson in 2016. Now, it is read by Messianic believers!!! Yes, we are thrilled at the beautiful gift our YHVH has entrusted in our hands.
I am the Assistant Gabbai of the Torah Service…
As Assistant Gabbai, it is my responsibility to oversee all aspects of our congregational Torah Service. My duties include protecting the Scroll and making sure individuals are ready to participate in the Torah Service. Participating in the Torah Service is not an obligation – it is a great honor.
There are 3 parts of our Torah Service:
- First is the Hebrew blessing, which leads the congregation in blessing the Scripture reading.
- Second is Torah Scroll Reading. The Torah Reader reads the weekly portion in Hebrew & give their translations of those Scriptures.
- Finally, is the Torah Drash (commentary). The Torah Drash where insights from studying this week’s Torah portion are shared.
We strongly encourage the congregation to read the weekly Parasha, Haftarah, and the Apostolic Scriptures as noted on the CFS monthly calendar.
The Scriptures declare that Yeshua is the Word (Torah) made flesh. The Scriptures also declare that Yeshua is YHVH! (as stated in Acts 2:21 and 4:12).
In short, at CFS we seek to exalt Yeshua and His Word in all we do in our daily lives.
After the service, if you have questions, please ask!
